When medication and psychotherapy haven’t fully relieved your symptoms, you don’t have to give up hope. If you’re looking for treatment options that can address depression, anxious depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), interventional psychiatry may be appropriate for you.

This type of psychiatry uses direct, procedure-based treatments. It is often recommended when other approaches haven’t produced the results you’re looking for. Interventional psychiatry is supported by research, showing that it can improve brain function. In the process, these treatments can enhance mood for patients with treatment-resistant conditions.

At Psychiatry Treatment Centers, we offer transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy and Spravato®. These treatments are two types of interventional psychiatry. They can enhance brain activity to improve symptoms when other methods have fallen short.

Let’s explore these two treatments, so you can see if they might be helpful to you.

2 interventional psychiatry treatments that go beyond medication

When traditional treatments haven’t delivered the results you’ve hoped for, interventional psychiatry may be a path worth exploring. These treatments stimulate brain activity to help enhance mood. Depending on the treatment, they can also ease symptoms of depression, anxious depression and OCD.

At Psychiatry Treatment Centers, we’re proud to offer these cutting-edge treatments. When other methods haven’t worked, TMS therapy or Spravato® may make a difference:

1. TMS therapy

TMS is an FDA-approved, noninvasive brain stimulation treatment that can help treat many conditions, including major depressive disorder. During each session, a magnetic coil is gently placed near the patient’s scalp. Then, it sends quick magnetic pulses to areas of the brain that affect mood regulation. These pulses stimulate nerve cells, improving brain activity and boosting neurotransmitters that can enhance mood.

It’s common to feel tingling or tapping sensations during treatment. But most patients don’t find them painful. Your provider can adjust the intensity and frequency of TMS, helping you remain comfortable. Usually, a series of 20 to 30 sessions is recommended over four to six weeks for the best outcome. Tailoring this treatment along the way can help you get the most from TMS therapy.

Studies have found promising results. About 82% of patients respond to TMS after other depression treatments haven’t been sufficient. At Psychiatry Treatment Centers, we’ve seen TMS therapy ease symptoms of depression and OCD for many of our patients. Our experienced team can tailor this treatment for you, too, so you can find relief.

2. Spravato® (esketamine)

Spravato® is an FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray that is used to treat severe depression. It is often prescribed when patients have not responded to traditional antidepressant treatments.

Spravato® works by increasing glutamate, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood. This boost in glutamate can lead to increased levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and promote neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form new connections between neurons. This process can improve mood and ease depression symptoms.

Many of our patients find that Spravato® has helped when other treatments haven’t been effective. It can provide fast and long-lasting relief. Clinical trials have shown that 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression responded to esketamine nasal spray within four weeks.

While individual results can vary with any treatment, our team has seen how fast Spravato® can work. It has made a positive impact in many of our patients’ lives. For many people who haven’t responded to other treatments, this nasal spray offers hope.

Complementary approaches to support interventional psychiatry

TMS therapy and Spravato® can provide much-needed relief. However, combining them with other approaches may further improve your outcome. Psychotherapy can help you learn coping skills and identify negative thought patterns. It can build on the positive changes from interventional psychiatry, helping you feel better.

Additionally, lifestyle changes can play a role in improving your mental health. Healthier habits include:

These lifestyle habits can boost mood and overall well-being. They can also provide a more stable foundation during your treatment. A healthier lifestyle can support the benefits you gain from interventional psychiatry. This holistic approach may help you achieve a lasting outcome.

Pairing interventional psychiatry with complementary treatments and healthy lifestyle changes can make a big difference on your journey to achieving long-term relief.
